Electric Anyone?

Electric Anyone?

Whether your one that embraces change quickly or like myself where change takes time and effort, one thing is guaranteed…..Change comes whether we like or want it to. Such is the case with those new fangled electric bikes we’re reading and seeing so much about in the industry press. While they make sense from a short commuter perspective, i am hard pressed to believe that the current stable of motorcycles with their 40 mile range (between charges) will really give enthusiast the “freedom” they so desire.  On a less cerebial level, what about that “whiny hum sound” they emit??  Spending time now in SoCal and getting a chance to eyeball a few (few in San Francisco and one in LA), it’s just odd seeing and hearing these type bikes on the city streets. Bikes in my mind, are heard first then seen!  Not visa versa.

Now regarding the distance challenges, there are some newer bikes out that do get upwards of 150 miles on a single charge.  Case in point, the Mission One, produced by Mission Motors.  However, it takes about 2 hours to recharge this puppy.  While i could probably maneuver around the time restraints to charge the bike, this challenge coupled with mileage limits between charges is not the type mileage limitations i’m looking to have placed on me if we’re wanting to head out across country or an overnight trip. So, until this mileage issue can improve to a point where they can get 200+ miles per charge, (and recharge in time it takes to fill a tank of gas?), there just isn’t going to be market acceptance from those in the industry that use their vehicles for touring, or even weekend joy riding. One other thing;  what will it cost me to recharge this bike vs a tank full of gas? More, less, same?  Now regarding that sound.  Well, guess we can just crank up the iPod with more ZZ Top or Sawyer Brown or something!
