Motorcycle rentals. Good for Industry?

Motorcycle rentals. Good for Industry?

Jan 20, 2011

Do motorcycle rentals help the motorcycle industry as a whole? Do they bring more jobs and stability to an industry rocked by a worldwide economic downturn, rider apprehension, outsourced and off shore manufacturing? (Of course there are those pundits that think that “what’s good for (insert company name) is good for the industry”, however that statement just isn’t valid, or based in fact or reality anymore with the ever growing “worldwide economy”). Anyway i digress. Seems HD thinks it a a good thing….at least for them. News releases state that Harley-Davidson Inc. has expanded its motorcycle rental program for owners from 37 locations to more than 300, including places overseas. The Milwaukee company says more than a quarter of Harley’s 1,300 dealerships are now in the Fly & Ride program for Harley Owners Group members. Harley has folded Fly & Ride into its authorized rental program, which anyone can use.

Kutter Harley-Davidson of Janesville has one of the busiest rental fleets in the nation, with between 4,000 and 5,000 rentals a year. Rental manager Lloyd Wellen says the dealership has found a niche with Europeans, many who work for companies based in Rockford, Ill., and come to the U.S. for a motorcycle vacation. The average rental rates start at $105 a day.
