Take one 1947 Indian motorcycle, a crazy 24 year old guy from Uraguay, then add a journey through 26 countries from 1964 to 1966 and you have the makings of an extraordinarily experience for one man. And a enthralling read for anyone with the interest in living vicariously through someone else’s adventures. Carlos Caggiani was 24 years old when he pushed off from his homeland of Uruguay. And almost immediately he has a number of problems ranging from bad weather, mechanical issues, financial and other difficulties. He spent time with everyone from poor natives in the Andes mountains, to rich families in the United States. He crossed rivers without bridges, suffered famine, intense heat and cold, guided his motorcycle through rain and snow storms, rode on dirt and cobblestone roads, was chased by the FBI, was shot at in Bolivia during a revolutionary war, and had a serious accident due to a mechanical failure in Panama that left him hospitalized for 17 days. He and his riding partner Miguel, upon reaching the United States travels from California and ends up in NY/NJ area for temporary work and rest. Then with a bit of planning and luck end up continuing his journey through to England, France, Belguim, Germand, Italy and Spain. This journey took two years but it won’t take that long to read! It’s a page turner for sure! You can get the book on Amazon and Carlos’ website HERE.
