While the “Too Broke For Sturgis” rally has it’s heart in the right place, apparently some attendees felt that carrying a little “armament” would enhance their enjoyment and/or keep them protected while in attendance. Unfortunately, an apparent argument over food has left three dead, one critically injured and a sour note hanging over this ABATE organized event. The TBFS rally was/is in response to the more commercialized Sturgis Rally S.D. rally (aka hugh corporate sponsors, inflated prices, rolex and/or weekend riders, unpredictable weather, traffic jams, large venue concerts etc etc, coupled with 600k of your closest motorcycle friends). The TBFS rally has a strong base of people from ABATE too, which promotes rider safety, autonomy and personal rights (having worked an event co-sponsored with the fine folk in Central FLA, you could not find better people). However this event (combined with a few other deadly run-in’s over the past years at other rallies), makes me scratch my head and ask, “which is worse: over commercialized events with bloated attendance OR shoot’m up gatherings that leave dead behind?” Either way, the debate continues i’m sure on both sides of that coin.
